A new era of digital connectivity is dawning across Southeast Asia, promising to transform how millions access information and conduct business. A landmark collaboration between Telekom Malaysia and global technology leaders including Meta, SoftBank, and NEC Corporation is bringing the ambitious Candle submarine cable project to life. This initiative represents more than just infrastructure development—it signifies a commitment to bridging digital divides and empowering communities throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

Scheduled for operational launch in 2028, the Candle system will span approximately 8,000 kilometers with its advanced 24-fiber pair configuration. This technological marvel will create vital digital arteries connecting Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Taiwan. The cable’s sophisticated design positions it as a pioneering infrastructure project capable of handling unprecedented data volumes, directly addressing the explosive growth in digital communication needs driven by 5G expansion and artificial intelligence applications.

Don Pang, Chairperson of the Candle Management Committee, emphasized the project’s transformative potential for regional communities. He noted that the cable system will deliver enhanced network diversity and resilience along crucial digital corridors, leveraging cutting-edge technology to ensure reliable connectivity. This infrastructure milestone reflects deep international cooperation and underscores a shared vision for advancing digital inclusion and economic opportunities for over half a billion people across participating nations.

Telekom Malaysia’s leadership sees this venture as fundamental to national and regional digital ambitions. Group Chief Executive Officer Amar Huzaimi Md Deris highlighted how the project demonstrates TM’s commitment to building robust digital infrastructure that meets escalating demands for cloud-based services and AI-driven innovation. The initiative strengthens Malaysia’s position as ASEAN’s digital nucleus while supporting global service providers and enterprises in expanding their regional footprint, ultimately connecting Malaysia to the world and the world to Malaysia through enhanced digital pathways.
