Malaysia is strengthening its position in the global halal market through targeted support for small and medium enterprises. The Halal Development Corporation Bhd (HDC) has introduced the Halal Home Grown Champion – Sourcing Partnership Program (HSPP), a multi-faceted initiative designed to elevate local companies to international standards. This program addresses key areas such as certification, branding, product development, and sustainability, helping businesses expand their reach and competitiveness.
The HSPP offers four distinct facilitation services tailored to the needs of halal SMEs. One core component focuses on obtaining international certifications, including HACCP and ISO 22000, through a six-month process that improves internal systems and builds client trust. Another service is a six-month digital branding program, where SMEs receive coaching to enhance online visibility and sales channels. These foundational supports enable businesses to meet export requirements and connect with broader audiences.
Further assistance is provided through product development, specifically in packaging design, to align with buyer expectations over a five-month period. This enhancement allows SMEs to create more appealing and high-quality packaging suitable for both domestic and international markets. Additionally, HDC has integrated environment, social, and governance (ESG) training into the program, responding to growing global demand for sustainable practices. This inclusion helps SMEs access markets that prioritize ESG compliance and ethical standards.
Recent updates to the program, referred to as HSPP 2.0, include expanded consultancy services for certification and a stronger emphasis on ESG practices. According to HDC Chief Executive Officer Hairol Ariffein Sahari, these improvements are vital for SMEs aiming to enter globalized markets. The program has evolved from a single-focus initiative to a comprehensive support system, reflecting the changing needs of the halal industry and reinforcing Malaysia’s halal supply chain ecosystem.
Since its launch in 2020, the HSPP has assisted nearly 200 companies in their internationalization efforts. Success stories include increased sales, new business proposals, and successful export shipments, demonstrating the program’s effectiveness. Eligible Malaysian-registered companies with valid halal certification, annual sales between RM300,000 and RM50 million, and at least three years of operation can apply online to participate. This initiative continues to foster homegrown halal champions, enhancing Malaysia’s role as a leader in the global halal economy.
