A controversial food service change in Washington’s Capitol Hill has sparked heated debate after a congressman compared the arrival of a Halal restaurant to a medieval military conquest. Republican Representative Mike Collins of Georgia objected to CHA Street Food replacing the popular Steak ‘n Shake, drawing criticism for his inflammatory remarks about the new Asian-American fusion eatery.

The incoming restaurant, known for its diverse menu featuring items like Zinger Burgers and Chicken Tikka Rolls, will offer modern conveniences like online ordering and catering services. Metz Culinary Management is taking over food operations from Sodexo after a decade, with renovations set to begin in August while ensuring minimal disruption to congressional staff.

Public backlash was swift, with many mocking Collins’ comparison of a restaurant change to historical conquests. Critics pointed out that the shift simply reflects normal business turnover rather than any ideological agenda. The new vendors, including Starbucks, Panera Bread, and Jimmy John’s, aim to provide a wider variety of dining options across the Capitol complex.

These changes follow broader renovations in the area, including the closure of Dunkin’ and &Pizza, now being replaced by upgraded coffee shops and fresh concepts. The transition highlights evolving tastes and commercial competition rather than any cultural takeover, despite the congressman’s dramatic claims.
