Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Perda Halal Park in Tasik Gelugor, he highlighted a critical gap: some states governed by parties with Islamic foundations have yet to establish dedicated halal industrial zones, while non-Islamic states like Penang have moved ahead.

Malaysia’s halal certification framework, recognized in nearly 50 countries, provides a solid foundation for expansion. With the global halal market expected to hit US$5 trillion by 2030 and domestic demand at US$113.3 billion, Zahid emphasized that the country must transition from certification leadership to becoming a dominant force in production, innovation, and trade. The current supply-demand gap, estimated at 80%, presents an actionable opportunity for Malaysian and Bumiputera entrepreneurs to claim a larger share of the global supply chain.

The Perda Halal Park development represents a strategic step toward closing this gap. Zahid noted that Malaysia’s 2024 halal exports reached RM61.79 billion, with food and beverages contributing over RM34.03 billion and the ingredients segment growing rapidly. Key markets include China, Singapore, Japan, the United States, and Indonesia. These figures underscore the commercial viability of Malaysian halal products and the need for more industrial capacity to meet rising global demand.

Under the Halal Industry Master Plan 2030, the government targets an 11% contribution to GDP from the halal sector, RM70 billion in exports, and 700,000 high-skilled jobs. State-level Halal Industry Councils have been established nationwide to drive this agenda. However, Zahid challenged states without operational halal parks to move from rhetoric to reality, pointing out that Penang—despite not being an Islamic state—has already set a precedent in halal industrial development.

For businesses and entrepreneurs, the immediate takeaway is clear: Malaysia’s halal certification opens doors to nearly 50 countries, but physical infrastructure is needed to scale production. The Perda Halal Park and similar projects offer a practical pathway to tap into the US$5 trillion global market, particularly for those in the food and beverage and ingredients sectors. The key is to act now, leveraging Malaysia’s trusted certification while building the industrial base to match growing international demand.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has urged Malaysian states lagging in halal infrastructure to convert policy pledges into tangible projects.
