In a significant move for its food and beverage operations, all IKEA restaurants, cafés, and bistros across Malaysia have now been formally certified halal by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim). The official certification, announced on Wednesday, provides national recognition for the company’s long-standing commitment to halal practices. This development is expected to further solidify customer trust in the meals served at every IKEA location in the country.

The certification follows a rigorous inspection process and close collaboration with Jakim, which scrutinized every aspect of the food chain. This included verifying the sources of all ingredients, examining kitchen workflows, and ensuring staff received proper training. For nearly three decades, IKEA has guided its Malaysian food preparation by halal principles, from sourcing certified materials to maintaining strict preparation standards and prohibiting unauthorized substances.

Malcolm Pruys, Country Retail Director of IKEA Malaysia, stated that the achievement reflects the company’s deep respect for local beliefs, culture, and the community. He emphasized that in Malaysia, halal is more than just compliance; it is a matter of trust, cultural respect, and religious observance. Pruys expressed that the affection Malaysians have for IKEA’s food has been a continuous inspiration, and the certification strengthens the bond the company shares with its customers.

Looking ahead, IKEA Malaysia remains committed to exploring ways to make its food experience more inclusive, accessible, and affordable. This initiative includes introducing more sustainable options, reducing food waste, and serving dishes that are not only delicious but also better for people and the planet. The halal certification ultimately reinforces IKEA’s promise to create a better everyday life through home furnishings and meals that reflect local values and expectations.
