Vietnam’s seafood industry is finding new growth opportunities in Halal markets, with tuna exports to Middle Eastern nations, Malaysia, and Brunei showing significant expansion. According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), this shift comes as traditional markets like the U.S. and Europe face economic challenges, prompting exporters to explore alternative destinations.

Data reveals a 35% surge in Vietnam’s tuna exports to the Middle East, climbing from $83 million in 2021 to $113 million last year. Despite geopolitical tensions in the region, demand remains strong, reinforcing its status as a high-potential market. Meanwhile, shipments to Malaysia and Brunei also grew by 36% and 24%, respectively, highlighting the increasing appeal of Vietnamese seafood in Muslim-majority economies.

Asia-Pacific dominates global Halal consumption, with over 62% of the world’s Muslim population residing in the region. Countries like Malaysia and Indonesia, home to 22.29 million and 241.52 million Muslims respectively, present vast opportunities for Halal-certified products. Vietnam’s strategic location positions it as a gateway to these lucrative markets, though competition from established Halal producers remains fierce.

Industry experts caution that while Vietnam’s tuna sector is gaining traction, it must enhance quality and branding to compete with seasoned players. The global Halal market, valued at billions, continues to expand, offering long-term potential for Vietnamese exporters willing to adapt to stringent certification standards and consumer preferences.
