A growing number of Bangladeshi nationals in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya have reportedly been exploiting their work permits by operating businesses under the guise of local ownership. Investigations reveal that these individuals manage various enterprises, including electronics shops and eateries, while employing Malaysian staff to maintain appearances. One such entrepreneur, Shah, confessed to bending the rules but defended his actions, claiming his ventures are legitimate and provide jobs for locals.
Shah, who arrived in Malaysia in 2007, initially sold laptops before expanding into multiple businesses. He admitted to minimizing his presence at his shops to avoid detection, relying instead on partners to handle daily operations. Despite acknowledging his permit misuse, he emphasized that his enterprises are lawful and contribute to the local economy. “I’m not stealing—I’m running halal businesses and employing Malaysians,” he stated, adding that supporting his family in Bangladesh remains his priority.
Another Bangladeshi businessman, Raju, shared a similar story, revealing he once earned a meager salary as a salesman before venturing into entrepreneurship. After facing unfair wage deductions, he saved enough to open a computer shop, registering it under a Malaysian friend’s name. Though fearful of repercussions, Raju continues operating, driven by the need to support his family abroad. “Life here is hard, but in Bangladesh, it’s worse,” he explained, echoing the sentiment of many in his position.
The situation highlights the complex realities faced by migrant workers who resort to unorthodox means to secure livelihoods. While their actions violate immigration laws, their stories reflect broader economic struggles and the lengths individuals will go to provide for their families. Authorities may need to address both enforcement and the systemic issues pushing foreign workers toward such measures.
